Can Jake Shields Upset GSP?

Uncategorized Add comments

Let me start with this……

I was VERY unimpressed with the Shields UFC debut against Martin Kampmann. In fact, I think he may have got off lucky to get the judge’s decision. Kampmann was crap in that fight too, but I actually had him ahead. For all the hype we had heard about Jake coming into the UFC, it was a total let down.

Now, I have to be fair here…….

Everyone sucks in their first UFC fight. Let’s look at the laundry list: Cro-cop, V-Silva, Sexyama, Herring, and the list goes on and on.

Let’s face it, it’s terrifying in there!!!!!!

People get nervous, their adrenaline pumps too hard, they lock up, and they get fatigued. Usually, if they are going to be good, you don’t see any upside till the second fight. So….Jake Shields…. you get a free pass for your dismal first effort………sort of.

See, here’s the deal. You can have a bad fight. Everyone does. You just can’t have one right before fighting GSP. He’s too good. If you are going to upset one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world, you better have your game right.

If I was Joe Silva, I would have given him someone like Koscheck or Sanchez in between. Just one more fight to get his confidence up. I actually feel kind of sorry for Jake. I think he rode the hype train right into a bad situation.

So here’s how the story goes:

George: Jab, Jab , Jab, Jab, Jab (Inset one hundred more jabs here)

Jake: “I can’t see, I better try a takedown.”

George: Sprawl, followed by immediate succesful takedown of his own.

Jake: Multiple submission attempts that don’t work. “WTF?”

George: Ground and pound with viscious knees and elbows. “Sorry, but I must destroy you.”

Jake: “Ouch, this sucks, I thought I was way better than this.”

Outcome: GSP wins by judges decision. 4-1
